The Definition and Components of Public Health

Health is a condition of mental, physical and emotional well being where infirmity and illness are absent. It entails having a positive outlook towards life, a sense of self-worth, and self-awareness. A person with good health has enough courage to face new experiences and potentials and also to deal with problems and difficulties in life. Conversely, a person with poor health leaves much to chance as health depends largely on how you think, feel, and what you do.

There are many components that constitute a person’s well-being. These are: physical health, mental health, and social health. People have varying levels of each of these, depending on the quality of their lives and the experiences they had. Here are some health risks and the solutions to them.

The four different components of this definition are physical, mental, social, and well-being. Having complete physical wellbeing is equated with having a healthy body, and a person who has poor physical health is unhealthy. Meanwhile, those who are mentally unhealthy are said to have a poor mindset and have a negative view towards life, which prevents them from living healthy lives.

Mental health problems are associated with issues like mood swings, anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. People with mental health problems are usually diagnosed as having a disorder or suffering from a physical illness. Usually people with mental health problems go through difficult experiences such as traumatic events that change their personality, or even growing old, which can result to psychological illnesses. The mental disorders may include bipolar and post traumatic stress disorders. Those with mental illness are more likely to have physical illness as well, for example, those with schizophrenia.

Public health aims to promote the well being of society as a whole. Its programs aim at preventing, reducing, and eliminating all health disorders and to maintain the health and wellbeing of the public. However, public health does not just deal with physical wellness. Public health also takes into account aspects of prevention, early detection, and treatment of these problems. It also tries to educate the public about the need for healthy lifestyles.

As mentioned earlier, there are several interrelated components that form the basis of a healthy lifestyle. They are both mental and physical wellness. There are numerous research and reviews regarding how each of these components can improve overall health. For instance, those with mental health disorders are advised to take proper medication. Those with physical ailments are advised to eat a healthy diet, get enough exercise, and engage in regular exercises.
