Love is an experience of the presence of another that involves the intention of attracting and sharing caring with that other. The experience can be of conscious connection or unconscious association. This connection may be expressed by acts or emotions, thoughts or feelings. In its essence, love is a way of being and becoming familiar with another person’s uniqueness and individuality.
Love encompasses a wide range of positive and deep emotional and physical states, from the purest personal goodness, the highest spiritual virtue, to the easiest physical pleasure. Love is also a way of being and becoming familiar with oneself, one’s place in the world, and what it means to be human. The depth and intensity of our emotions depend largely on the depth and intensity of our understanding and relationship to others. Love has been called the drug of the soul.
Love brings order to chaos. Chaos is often the result when forces within ourselves are at odds with one another, especially in relationships. Chaos can bring injury, pain, and suffering – and we often experience these things in relationships, as a result of the stress of day-to-day life.
Love is about sacrifice. We must come to terms with the fact that love requires sacrifice. It is not enough to simply love and be loved. We have to love unconditionally and fully. When we give unconditionally – and accept fully the things that we cannot change – we find peace.
Love is not selfish. Love does not mean that we base our actions on the welfare of others. Love does not require the alleviation of others’ pain. The bottom line in all relationships is: “You give love, you receive.”
A good way to deepen your love relationships is to spend time with those who are in your life – friends, family members, co-workers – doing small kindnesses for them. You’ll see that each individual person loves you in a different way. Learn to listen to and understand their heart. You’ll discover a richness in yourself that you never thought was possible.
Accepting love from strangers is difficult. You have to make it a habit to look past the surface of what they are saying. When you meet someone for the first time, smile when you meet them, and then ask, “What’s up?” This will help you develop a feeling of welcome when people show you interest or when you meet someone for the first time.
When you meet someone you love, do not put too much pressure on yourself to tell them how you feel. Simply say, “I love you” and leave it at that. Trust is the foundation of all relationships. If you have trust issues, work through them. The more you open up, the more transparent you will be.
Do you love yourself? If so, then love will find a way to come into your heart. You deserve love.
