Fashion is a form of individuality and self-expression in a certain time and place and at a certain context, of apparel, footwear, accessories, cosmetics, hair style, makeup, hairstyles, and general body posture. In its general usage, however, the word also means a particular appearance defined by the fashion industry. The term has a number of different meanings. In popular use the word is often associated with hip hop culture and postmodernism. It can also mean the quality of a product or service, a way of dressing, and even certain gender differences.
The modern era of fashion started around the turn of the twentieth century and is known as the postmodern era. This style of fashion is characterized by rapid innovation in clothing and by the rejection of convention in many areas, including the application of conventional gender roles. One example of a concept in this theory is the “third wave” of clothing development, which refers to clothing of the future characterized by flexibility and by ignoring traditional designs and materials.
Since the late sixties, fashion has increasingly become an important part of the cultural experience of most people in the developed world. The reach of fashion has increased dramatically and today, people choose to wear clothing according to the fashion trends selected by designers, which in turn are advertised on television, in newspapers and magazines, and through large-scale fashion shows. Although some people regard fashion as an unattractive or silly activity, it is an important part of a person’s identity. As far as the experience of dressing in the real world is concerned, people have a good chance of following the latest fashions if they choose to visit a store that sells new items or take part in an fashion show.
The history of fashion is quite a long one, having origins in ancient Egypt and other pre-ocial societies. In modern times, fashion has become an international phenomenon, with a number of designers belonging to different countries. Some of the well-known designers in this field are Zaha Hadid, Tom Ford, Dior, Christoph Coppock, Jean Paul Gaultier, Yves Saint Laurent, Frank Gehry and Mario Bollinger. Each of these men and women creates clothes according to their own personal ideas, as well as according to stylistic decisions, innovation and invention. Even though they differ in their design concepts and style, their clothing shares a common aesthetic quality: contemporary and stylish.
A number of companies offer clothes for both genders, as well as children. Most major designers create children’s wear lines that are targeted towards an audience of pre-teens and teenagers. However, as years pass, fashion continues to develop, influencing the views, beliefs and preferences of people of all ages. Many people still adhere to traditional fashion and dress codes, even if they may have changed for the more modern, fashionable trend of the last few years.
With the coming of the Internet, many advances have been made within the fashion industry, providing greater access to buyers and producers as well as providing a wider base for the designers. The Internet provides for a cheaper and more convenient way to market, as well as a more personalized way to communicate. The Internet has also increased the scope and size of the fashion industry, giving birth to new and larger companies which can provide a wider variety of designs and styles than ever before. If we continue to follow the fashion trends, we will soon find ourselves living in a society that influences and shapes our lifestyles – one influenced by fashion.
