Love is something that has been part of mankind’s experience since his early days, right up until his ultimate departure from this world. Love encompasses a wide range of both physical and psychological states, from the strongest personal virtue or religious belief, to the most tranquil, intimate sexual experience, the greatest aesthetic or cultural pleasure. In fact, love is not just about lust or sex per se. It is an attitude or state of mind that allows us to be fully present in ways that are both intimate and expansive. It is the very foundation of our being human, and a means by which we can live and let live in complete freedom with all of our senses functioning simultaneously.
The term love affair actually derives from a more prosaic form of the word and referred more to a breach of intimacy between two people. In these matters, however, there is no difference between being engaged in a deeply personal relationship and falling into an intimate act between two lovers. What is important is that the participants in such acts are coming together in an endeavor to fulfill a common goal, which in this case would be to fall in love with each other. Whether this is done within a romantic context, or is accompanied by a sexual one, love is the end product of the participants in a passionate affectionate act.
A healthy relationship can take many forms. There can be long-term and enduring romantic relationships, or there can be fleeting infatuation or attraction for a short period of time. Regardless, of how long the relationship goes on for, there will always be two people involved, with differing but similarly healthy intentions. One who wants to be loved, and the other who is seeking to feel cared for.
Love is about much more than physical attraction or being able to satisfy our sexual desires. The best definition of love is expressing our feelings to another person in a sincere way and sharing the experience of passion with another. While there may be a desire to express affection physically, that is not what love is truly about. True love is caring and sharing for the good of another, with no underlying sexual ulterior motive.
In order to find true love, one must first know oneself completely, both inside and out. We begin with our innermost self, and through that we come to appreciate the qualities of the other person. From there, we then evaluate our own behaviors and try to improve them while also becoming better individuals. When we find that someone else who exhibits those same qualities as us, it becomes a true and deep friendship. Once a friendship is developed, it becomes a foundation for deeper emotional bonds and experiences. These can become the beginnings of a fulfilling and lifelong relationship.
