The Relationship Between Well-Being and Health
Health is a condition where physical, mental and emotional well being is maintained where infirmity and illness are absent. The concept of health is relative, as it depends on what is current for you. Everyone has different definitions of what health means to them but there are certain defining factors that everyone considers to be part of the quality of life that one can experience.
Health is important because people will have a better quality of life if they are healthy and physically fit. Poor health conditions have a negative impact on one’s well being as the body cannot function properly and therefore an illness or disease results. One of the biggest consequences of poor health is the inability to participate fully in the community which is the basis of one’s well-being. Education, good nutrition, regular exercise, social interaction and ensuring a healthy way of life are important components that contribute to health conditions and illnesses.
Mental health refers to the ability to cope with everyday activities and scenarios. It also involves one’s thoughts and perceptions and their abilities to maintain concentration and focus. A person with mental health is able to accept new challenges and can adapt quickly to change. People who suffer from mental illness often find it difficult to work and maintain employment and can have high levels of stress. Mental well-being includes reducing the impact of stress on the body and enhancing the person’s capacity to cope with day to day activities.
Quality of Life: The quality of life or the extent to which a person enjoys his present circumstances and the future prospects consists of three elements. These include physical health, mental health and emotional health. All these three elements improve when one’s physical health is good; this is reflected in one’s appearance and attitudes. Illness and disability make a person disabled and this affects their capacity to live life to the fullest. Emotionally, people with mental illness often have depression and anxiety and this causes problems at work and home and affects their capacity to make good decisions and to enjoy life. Mental diseases also affect a person’s performance in social, family and recreational activities and affect how they view themselves and others.
The risk of developing mental illnesses and its symptoms are high as most mental illnesses are not detected until they have progressed to an advanced stage. This means that early detection of any suspected illness may help to improve the patient’s quality of life and lower the chances of the condition worsening. The three components of quality of life reflect both physical and emotional health.
A well-balanced lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, regular exercise and good nutrition is essential to achieving good physical health. It is also important to ensure that the person eats a balanced diet and does regular exercise and avoids too much alcohol or smoking. Regular visits to a health practitioner are recommended for patients to monitor their condition and progress. A health professional will be able to detect any potential health problems and guide the patient towards the best course of treatment. A good quality of life that is free from illness and stress can improve one’s well-being and contribute to improved health and well-being.
