Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle and Defined Health
Health is a condition of mental, physical and emotional well-being where infirmity and illness are absent. People live with poor health because it affects their day to day life. The word “health” actually refers to the ability to function normally in society. It involves physical well being, mental health and the emotional health. There are three general areas of health care: mental health, physical health and the third are ethics or moral status.
Mental health includes the ability to think properly, understand what is happening to oneself and relating to others. When one has a low well-being, he/she may have difficulties in making decisions, have poor concentration, inability to work productively, relationships may be strained and there may be anxiety, panic attacks and phobias. People with mental health need to know that there is no “cure” for their illness, and they need to be treated with kindness, compassion, understanding, patience and respect at all times. They need psychological, social, educational, occupational and medical support to promote good health.
The second area of health is physical health. It refers to the ability to maintain health, maintain well-being and cope with stress. The key is having a healthy body through a healthy diet, regular exercise, a balanced lifestyle, smoking cessation and a healthy lifestyle, including a supportive surrounding. There are many facets to a healthy lifestyle, such as: having a good diet, physical activity, daily relaxation routines, regular medication and stress management techniques.
A healthy physical body is achieved through a good diet and exercise. Through a healthy diet, we help to maintain nutrition and body weight while at the same time reducing risks for heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other chronic illnesses. Through exercise, we strengthen our muscles and bones and build our stamina. Through drug use, we reduce the risk of physical illness, but at the same time increase our odds of remaining mentally healthy.
The third area of general health is sleep quality. We are more prone to physical illness when we have a poor sleep-wake cycle. This is because an unhealthy sleep-wake cycle results in low levels of energy and concentration, which can in turn lead to poor decision making, increasing the likelihood of an unfortunate outcome such as an accident or injury. When considering a healthy lifestyle and defined health, it is important to maintain sleep and physical health. In order to do that, it is helpful to implement a sleep schedule, find a quality bed to sleep on, eat a well balanced diet, exercise regularly, manage stress, maintain a positive mental attitude and avoid substance abuse.
Health is neither a good nor bad thing; it is something we strive for regardless of its material aspect. Health is indeed the sum of all the parts of our lives, which are interlinked and dependent on one another. Good health is necessary for a happy and productive life and the absence of which can mean an inability to live a full life and enjoy all that it has to offer. Good health is something that we can all pursue, but only a well-balanced life can ensure its success.
