Unlike legitimate businessmen, mobster money was not subject to the same scrutiny as corporate income. As a result, the casinos they built were extravagant and flamboyant. They offered a variety of attractions, including free show tickets and hotel rooms to high rollers. These were intended to compensate players for the large amount of money they spent in the casino.

The word casino derives from the Latin casin, meaning “little house.” Today, a modern casino is an elaborate building that features gaming areas, restaurants, bars and other attractions. The architecture of a casino is usually neoclassical or baroque in style, and the interior is designed with intricate details and expensive decorations. Most casinos have a security force and a specialized surveillance department that work closely together to prevent crime. In addition, they use closed-circuit television to monitor their premises. Because of the large amounts of money handled within a casino, both patrons and staff may be tempted to cheat or steal, either in collusion with each other or independently. This is why casinos spend a great deal of money on security.
